As a polyhydroxy alcohol that is miscible with water, how can it be dried to obtain a product with high purity and low water content?
I. Molecular Sieves
Dissolve the product in acetone (a dilute solution facilitates more complete drying), then add molecular sieves and stir for an extended period to adsorb water molecules. Once the water content is verified to be within specifications, filter and evaporate the acetone.
Molecular sieves are chosen because other drying agents function by forming hydrogen bonds to adsorb water, which would also cause them to adsorb the hydroxyl groups of the product. In contrast, molecular sieves utilize a pore structure specifically suited to adsorb water molecules, providing excellent drying results for alcohols without absorbing the product itself.
II. High-Temperature Rotary Evaporation
High temperatures disrupt the hydrogen bonds formed between the product and water molecules, while the vacuum removes water vapor. During the rotary evaporation process, anhydrous ethanol can be added multiple times. Ethanol vapor acts as a carrier to facilitate the removal of water vapor (co-distillation).
III. Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
Solid potassium hydroxide can be added, followed by stirring and settling. Water is adsorbed onto the surface of the KOH and sinks to the bottom of the vessel. The upper layer is decanted, and fresh KOH is added. This works because the hydrogen bonds formed between water molecules and KOH are stronger than those formed between water and the product, or between the product and KOH.
