Sodium 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropane sulfonate(cas:126-83-0) can undergo an etherification reaction with starch in alkaline environment to produce sulfonyl-containing starch derivatives. This type of sulfonyl-containing starch derivative is an excellent water loss reducing material for drilling fluid, good heat resistance, salt resistance, and anti-calcium and magnesium capabilities. After natural starch is modified by sulfonylation, sulfonyl and hydroxyl groups introduced into the starch molecules, enhancing its hydrophilicity and enabling it to form a soft and dense filter cake on the well wall, giving the starch a loss reduction capability.

Preparation of 2-Hydroxy-3-sulfopropyl Starch 

In a four-neck flask equipped with a therm, stirring rod, and condenser, add 16.2g of starch and 1.12mL of 40% sodium hydroxide solution sequentially followed by a certain amount of anhydrous ethanol. Stir and react in an environment of 35℃ for 30min. Raise the temperature and then add theifying agent, sodium 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonate, and drop a certain amount of 40% sodium hydroxide solution, to stir. Maintain the temperature for a period of time, cool the product, and adjust the pH value to around 7-8 with dilute hydrochloric acid., wash the filter cake with ethanol of appropriate concentration, place it in a vacuum dryer to dry, and grind it into powder to obtain the loss reduction agent 2-hydroxy3-sulfopropyl starch  (HSPS).
